Aperture Appoints New Director

Juan Garcia de Oteyza is settling into his new job as Executive Director of the Aperture Foundation. Aperture, a New York City-based photography foundation named de Oteyza to the post of Executive Director after conducting a nearly year-long search to fill the position. “I am honored that the Aperture board has appointed me to this exciting position,” stated de Oteyza. De Oteyza will pick up where former Aperture Executive Director Ellen Harris, who resigned from the position in June of 2007 stating personal reasons, left off.

Aperture was founded in 1952 and created as a forum for fine photography, which was new to the photography world at the time. Known as a fine publisher of photography books, Aperture now has over 120 titles in its collection. Aperture’s role in the rapidly evolving world of photography is more crucial than ever, according to de Oteyza. De Oteyza has extensive experience in publishing as he spent many years prior to landing at Aperture overseeing several publications.

Aperture’s 2008-09 season includes the exhibition and publication, Invasion 68 Prague, by Josef Koudelka; an exhibit and book by the late Luigi Ghirri, who revolutionized the field of Italian and contemporary photography; Paul Fusco’s RFK, a powerful documentation of the reaction of the American people to the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy; Pitch Blackness, a monograph by rising star Hank Willis Thomas, which will be accompanied by a series of public programs on the East and West coasts; and publications by such international artists as Jacqueline Hassink and Thomas Ruff.
