Christine Sevilla (1951–2009)

Christine Sevilla, a contributor to Afterimage for the last seven years, tragically passed away on November 30, 2009, in her home in Pittsford, New York. She was 58. She received degrees from UC Santa Barbara, SUNY Brockport, and Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). Christine began writing for Afterimage in 2003. She contributed essays, book reviews, and interviews, and helped to proofread the magazine for two years.

Christine had many gifts: she was a talented singer, a prolific writer, a book designer and artist book maker, an environmental activist, a photographer, and a canvassing Democrat. She was a woman of conviction, energy, and great sensitivity. For several years, she ran the art gallery at the Unitarian Church in Rochester and taught information design and visual communication at RIT. Her latest works currently on show are two digital metal prints of her long-term Wetland Project, part of the “Arena” group show at Booksmart Studio (Rochester, NY), and an artist book at Rochester Contemporary’s Annual Members’ Show. She also published several books on information design, local environmental issues and parks, and her trips to Spain. Her latest article, “Why is the county’s Capital Improvement Program providing $2 million for Greece Canal Park?,” which she had been writing on the day before her premature death, was published on the website of City, a weekly Rochester paper: “ENVIRONMENT: From activist Sevilla, a plea for the parks”.

A memorial service is scheduled for December 16 at the University of Rochester at the Interfaith Chapel, 6:30 p.m.
