Drawing for Photographers and Anyone Else Interested in Mark Making Systems
Rick Hock

Thursday and Friday, June 21-22
9:30am-5:00pm; $250

You’ve heard it said before “anyone can draw” and I’ll say it again anyone can draw. It’s simply how you think about what drawing is. Photography in fact is nothing more than a mark making system, another pencil in the pencil box. This workshop will examine various systems of mark making and their application through practical exercises. Requirements: No experience necessary. Materials required: large smooth newsprint drawing pad (19”x24” or larger the better); soft pencil 4B or softer; good size eraser; charcoal sticks; small bottle of India ink; container for water; anything else you want to make marks with.

Rick Hock is former Director of Exhibitions and Program Design at George Eastman House, International Museum of Photography and Film. He has organized, curated, and designed numerous exhibitions including Enhancing the Illusion: The Origins and Progress of Photography, Seeing the Unseen: Harold Edgerton and the Wonders of Strobe Alley. The Sports Illustrated Exhibition of American and Soviet Sports Photography, The Pencil of Nature: Photograph’s Trace and Transformation, Nathan Lyons: A Survey 1957-2000, World From My Front Porch: The Photography of Larry Towell, and Vision and Obsession: The Remarkable George Eastman.

He has taught courses in the History and Art of Photography at The University of Rochester, The Rochester Institute of Technology, Visual Studies Workshop and the State University of New York, Geneseo and Exhibition Development for Ryerson University’s program in Photographic Preservation and Collections Management. He is the recipient of two National Endowment for the Arts fellowships. His photographic work has been exhibited internationally and is included in several major collections including The Museum of Modern Art, The Philadelphia Museum of Art, The Huston Museum of Art, and The Creative Center for Photography.
