Bookbinding in the Age of Digital Production On-line publishing, print-on-demand services, plus a wide variety of desktop printers and digital copiers offer more opportunity than ever to produce books. However, the popularity and economics of e-books promises to dematerialize the book as we know it. What's a poor book artist to do? This workshop mixes time tested techniques of hand binding with innovative formatting designed to make the most of digital printing's limitations. From simple folded and glued structures to 'repurposed' sewn bindings, participants will gain skills and learn techniques to solve problems of physical structure and inspire visual concepts. Structures are applicable to small edition as well as one-of-a-kind binding. Scott McCarney has been making books as works of art for close to thirty years. His bookworks explore many media, from offset and digital printing to sculptural installation. He lectures, teaches and exhibits internationally and is currently an adjunct faculty member at Rochester Institute of Technology. His work for the past several years has utilized print–on–demand technology with intensive pre– and post–production consideration. |
