Spring 2010 Evening and Weekend Community Workshops

Street Photography
Diane DiRoberto
Saturday, May 15
10:00am–4:00pm
$75

Capture the unusual in the every day on the streets of Rochester. In this informal daylong workshop, you'll do more than stop and shoot the roses, you'll learn to express your view of the world--whether your interest is in documenting life as you see it, capturing an artful interpretation of a scene or taking pictures purely for the pleasure of it.

Street photography often concentrates on a single human moment, the 'decisive moment' - a stolen kiss, a man jumping a puddle, a woman lost in her thoughts in a diner, or a row of bicycles glowing in the sunlight. In selected settings, we will explore these bread-and-butter moments of street photography. Techniques on invisibility, overcoming shyness to ask permission as well as getting releases for your photograph will also be covered. Knowledge of your camera - whether it's a manual or point and shoot, film or digital - is essential.

Class begins promptly at 10:00 am at Visual Studies Workshop where we  will meet and view examples of each others work - or, if you do not have printed  photographs, images from magazines that appeal to your eye will do.  After discussing the objectives of our day together, we will head out to locations selected to provide good photo opportunities.  After our three-hour shoot, we will break for a one-hour lunch (location TBD).  At 3pm, we will return to Visual Studies to download some of the images that were taken digitally and view them in the context of our class. Photographers who shoot film may send jpegs of their images after their film is processed. Selected photographs from each participant will be available on line for the class to view.

Diane DiRoberto is a photographer and writer who loves the magic of making images come to life in the darkroom. Diane has recently moved back to Rochester from New Mexico where she owned and operated The Darkroom, a community darkroom and gallery in Santa Fe. Her work has been exhibited nationally.
