Learn the basics of wet-plate collodion photography to make photographs on metal. The wet-plate process was developed by Frederick Scott Archer in 1851 and continues to have a loyal following of practitioners. This 19th century process requires patience and perseverance but the results can be exquisite. The workshop will cover how to pour and sensitize collodion, properly expose and develop your plate, and to apply a protective varnish. We will be working in a darkroom with chemicals so please wear old clothing or an apron that you don’t mind staining. Bring objects to photograph and a 4x5 camera and tripod if available.
Jenn Libby is an installation artist with a penchant for tactile, antiquated processes such as wet plate collodion photography and hand-processed 16mm film. She teaches historic photographic processes in the graduate program at the Visual Studies Workshop. www.jennlibby.com
