Friedman's approach to documentary photography is distinguished by his incorporation of personal references as well as references to the act of photographing within the image. He works in extended series with images variously using the vignette of his large format camera, tilts to include the camera bed, personal objects, amulets, and text, as well as placing himself within the image. Work from the series "Nazi Concentration Camps," "My Life in Sports," "Wexner Center for the Arts, Construction Project," (a comissioned work), "Kissing," and "The History of Photography" are available.
