Traub has been involved with further the appreciation of photography his entire career. He has been an author, co-author or editor on more than adozen books. He has worked as a curator and was the founding director of the Chicago Center for Contemporary Photography, now the Museum of Contemporary Photography, as well as Director of Light Gallery in New York City from 1977-1980. He has participated on numerous photographic projects including documenting New York City's waterfront.
