John Wood: On the Edge of Clear Meaning
This major touring retrospective of the work of John Wood, has been curated by Nathan Lyons, Director Emeritus of VSW, with Marie Via, Director of Exhibitions of the Memorial Art Gallery and Alison Nordstrom, Curator of Photographs at the George Eastman House. The selection of 213 pieces is the most comprehensive display of Wood’s work to date and encompasses the full range of his prolific career from the late 1950s to the present. John Wood’s style refuses to be shoehorned into one category. A master of straight photography, collage, cliché verre, solarization, mixed media, lithography, drawing and more, he decisively incorporates a variety of media.

The exhibition encompasses Wood's serial investigations, including a selection of photographs, collages and montages as well as his “Sand” and “Rock” drawings; “Silent Protest,” which contains photographs and assemblages dealing with social and ecological issues; a selection of works on paper including: watercolors, cyanotypes, wax drawings, mixed media pieces and whirligigs

An accompanying book, John Wood: On the Edge of Clear Meaning, (Steidl, Germany 2008, 176 pages, hardbound) contains 168 color plates; an essay by the critic, David Levi Strauss; an essay on Wood's teaching career by Ezra Shales; a biography and comprehensive bibliography by William S. Johnson; and a DVD featuring a video interview with John Wood and examples his books in a page-turning software.

The exhibition has been supported, in part, by Alfred University and by individual contributiions.
