Subject and Association DescriptionJohn Wood (1922-2012) was a multi-disciplinary artist and educator. Born in California, Wood studied photography at the Institute of Design of the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago and took classes with Harry Callahan and Art Sinsabaugh. Shortly after graduating from the Institute, Wood joined the staff of Alfred University in 1955. He would go on to teach at Alfred for 35 years. Wood worked in many different mediums including photography, collage, drawing, and lithography. His interests and concerns–such as environmental issues and militarism–carried over across these mediums as well as his visual style which mixed abstraction, representation, serialization, and sequence. In a 1977 artist statement, Wood wrote: “I would like my pictures to be abstract / and poetic visual images / of friends and the world / no story telling / sometimes slight propaganda and quiet protest / on the edge of clear meaning.”
