VSW Salon, Fall 2021 October 14: Reading Sweetgrass

In her New York Times bestseller, Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge and the Teaching of Plants, Botanist Robin Wall Kimmerer draws on her life as an indigenous scientist, and as a woman, and shows how other living beings–asters and goldenrod, strawberries and squash, salamanders, algae, and sweetgrass–offer us gifts and lessons, even if we’ve forgotten how to hear their voices.
Join us for a panel of six area artists who will present their work and have a discussion about Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge and the Teaching of Plants by Robin Wall Kimmerer.
This unique conversation will be about the messages of Braiding Sweetgrass, which draw from Wall Kimmerer’s life as an indigenous scientist, mother, woman, poet and storyteller and shows how other living beings offer us gifts and lessons. Participating artists will discuss the connections and the challenge of Braiding Sweetgrass to their own practice. Each will give a brief talk, slideshow, or reading of a piece they have made that resonates or is in direct response to Wall Kimmerer’s incomparable text.
On the panel are interdisciplinary artist Lee Cannarrozo, book artist Michael Darcy, photographic and textile artist Hernease Davis, industrial designer Mindy Magyar, cultural anthropologist and artist-publisher Kathryn Mariner, and ceramicist Kate Whorton, moderated by VSW Director Tate Shaw.
On October 20 at 7:30 pm, Kimmerer will be visiting the SUNY Brockport Campus for a talk and book signing.

Suggested donation for all Salon Series events is $5-10. Donations can be made through the VSW Bookstore.
