Exhibitions Baby’s on Fire and Any Idiot Should Know That by Kristin Reeves

June 26-July 28, 2019 Project Space One

  • Kristin Reeves will use her Project Space residency to develop a multi-16mm film performance and installation. “Baby’s on fire, and any idiot should know that.” is the laser hot reckoning of three Jane Does: girls who contract gonorrhea only to find society blames Mom’s ineffective laundry abilities. The project uses found 16mm footage, original animation/optical printing, and lasers to burn-down fictitious narratives of child sexual abuse and incest. A dubious animated sequence found in “Health Is A Victory”, an educational film, sets in motion the conflict between survivors of childhood sexual assault and the misinformation that harms survivors coping with trauma. Reeves’ project highlights the social and physiological obstacles that victims have to navigate using film performance, pop culture, and humor to make visible a taboo but important subject.

Kristin Reeves has shown her interdisciplinary work internationally in museums, galleries, theaters, and festivals such as the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, Crossroads, Ann Arbor Film Festival, European Media Arts Festival, Steppenwolf Theater, and Microscope Gallery. She is an Assistant Professor of Art at Murray State University in western Kentucky.

  • Support for this exhibition came from Max and Marian Farash Foundation, Joy of Giving Something, and the New York State Council on the Arts Visual Arts program.
