Exhibitions Books of Knowledge by Alicia Taylor-Austin
May 15-June 9, 2019 Project Space One
Alicia Austin-Taylor will be working from a volume in a series of children’s encyclopedias first published in the United States in 1910 called The Book of Knowledge. Starting six years ago, she began redacting images and text from the pages by physically cutting them as well as adding found elements. Exploring the archives at VSW she hopes to identify more images that will form new relationships and work toward finalizing a book from the material.
Alicia Taylor-Austin is a visual artist compelled by a desire to transform material by hand. She has an MFA in Visual Studies from the Visual Studies Workshop and is currently an Assistant Professor of Art in Print Media and Director of the Ortlip Gallery at Houghton College.
Support for this exhibition came from Max and Marian Farash Foundation, Joy of Giving Something, and the New York State Council on the Arts Visual Arts program.
