Exhibitions Light Sensitive: Cinematic Installations by Tara Merenda Nelson
November 7 - December 20, 2014 VSW Gallery
- End of Empire (FourMats), multi-channel projection, Tara Merenda Nelson
Light Sensitive: Cinematic Installations features new and recent work by VSW Artist-In-Residence Tara Merenda Nelson. The artist will display a selection of light-based “cinema sculptures,” devised and constructed as instruments for visual research. This multi-media exhibit explores the relationship between projected light and the human perceptual mechanism by expanding and engaging with multiple layers of cinematic projection devices.
End of Empire, Part 1 in the FourMats series, multi-channel projection
This multi-media installation uses four formats to compose a single image of the Kodak building in Rochester, NY. Using discontinued color-reversal film stocks in 16mm, Super 8 and slide film, along with HD video, this looping installation documents the final days of the Kodak empire. End of Empire is both an homage to Warhol’s 1964 durational film, Empire, and an elegy to Kodak film in the final days of the industry.
Screens, light sensitive substrate exposed to 16mm projections of classic cinema found in the collection of the Visual Studies Workshop
Includes: THE WIZARD OF OZ, SINGING IN THE RAIN, THE HOBBIT, CASABLANCA, KING KONG, BATTLESHIP POTEMKIN, NANOOK OF THE NORTH, METROPOLIS
Catharsis, 16mm projector, fan, mulberry paper
Catharsis is a filmless film with no set duration which can be viewed in 3 layers: while standing in front of the floating screen; while sitting behind the screen, facing it; and from a sitting position while facing the projector with eyes closed. The latter position gives the viewer the opportunity to experience a film made with their own mind, which only they can see.
Please close your eyes before sitting in front of the projected light. Not advisable for visitors who are sensitive to flickering light.
