Exhibitions “…new love.” by Hernease Davis

February 1 – 28, 2021 Project Space One

  • “…new love.” is the tentative title for my series of cyanotypes on canvas, silk and linen. It is an aesthetic departure from my ongoing body of work, A Womb of My Own (Mistakes Were Made in Development), where I incorporate my rituals of self-care to produce self-portrait photograms and crocheted blankets. As in Womb, I am using photo-sensitive fabric surfaces as a space to rest (each exposure in the sun is at least 20 minutes). I then selectively develop the image using paint brushes or crocheted foundation chains. The portions of the fabric that I do not develop will continue to change and respond to their environment and abstracting the underlying image.

Hernease plans to use the residency to explore more cyanotype fabrications and re-shape the pieces as photographic sculpture using felting, suspension and sewing techniques.

Hernease Davis earned her M.F.A from the ICP – Bard. She has exhibited with the Visual Studies Workshop, Houston Center for Photography, and the International Center of Photography. Hernease recently completed a residency at the Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts and is based in Brooklyn, NY.
