Nicholas O’Brien is an artist, game designer, and writer based in Brooklyn. He creates and studies games that use “essayistic” approaches to storytelling. By comparing avant-garde and experimental cinema to indie & art games, O’Brien leverages critical and poignant introspection to approach a wide variety of sensitive and timely subjects like globalism, the privatization of public services, and parenthood during the pandemic.

During his time at VSW, he will be working on his upcoming narrative and stone-skipping game tentatively titled The Trailing Edge. This project is a nuanced, non-linear story that shares his journey of becoming a father during the pandemic and struggling to overcome the doubts and anxieties that this entails.

This program is supported in part by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the New York State Legislature; the National Endowment for the Arts; the Max and Marian Farash Foundation; and Joy of Giving Something.
