    Artist’s Statement

Filmmakers Rebecca Barten and David Sherman’s creative collaboration of over thirty years began in 1994 with the founding of their first DIY cinema project, Total Mobile Home microCINEMA in San Francisco.  Since then, in addition to making personal films, their joint practice has continued to redefine cinematic exhibition with intimate, handmade screenings and rigorous thematic programming that transforms the space between artists and audience while, at the same time, expressing a deep commitment to the poetic, political, and spectral power of experimental media. Most recently, Barten/Sherman have been touring a feature length live cine-essay about their history, conceptual practice, archive and ethos: The Birth of Microcinema to venues throughout the country.
