Shamanic Materialism: Autonomous Forms of Remembrance

When an image is seen it begins to decompose. When a story is told it starts to be a conversation. For Colectivo los Ingrávidos, this gradual disappearance in the process of transmission is a shared space of listening, where poetry becomes an autonomous form of history. Their omen images are shifting configurations arranged by intuition and friction: they disintegrate, get downloaded, edited, separated from the sound, and multiplied, connecting with each other and cracking up visual grammar like an egg. Against the supposed neutrality of the chronicle, the archival documents, and the linearity of colonial history, Ingrávidos reactivate superstitions from the past. Their camera is under the spell of animals, stones, land, mountains, lakes, and cactuses counteracting the colonial violence. Twelve Frames of Relation exposes the colonial view and the link between knowledge, classification, possession and control. 24 Omens is a magical view, in praise of superstition that embraces non-objective forms of knowledge.  – Almudena Escobar López

Colectivo Los Ingrávidos emerged as a radical audiovisual form of resistance in Mexico in 2012. Their work draws transhistorical connections across time combining found footage and 16mm material with digital glitches and documentary poetry. Almudena Escobar López is Time-Based Media Curatorial Assistant at the Memorial Art Gallery. She has been collaborating with Colectivo Los Ingrávidos since she co-programmed their work as part of the Flaherty NYC series in 2018. From October 12th-31st, VSW.ORG will be  streaming a program of short films by Colectivo Los Ingrávidos, as well as a program of films and videos from the VSW Film Collection selected by members of the collective and Escobar López. On October 21st, Escobar López will be in conversation with Colectivo Los Ingrávidos to discuss the relationships between archives, colonialism, and image-making. This conversation will be recorded and posted on VSW.ORG.

Materialismo chamánico: formas autónomas de memoria

Cuando una imagen es vista, comienza su descomposición. Cuando una historia es narrada, se transforma en conversación. Para Colectivo los Ingrávidos, esta desaparición gradual del proceso de transmisión es un espacio de escucha compartida, donde la poesía se convierte en una forma de historiografía autónoma. Sus imágenes-presagio son configuraciones en continuo devenir dictadas por la intuición y la fricción: se desintegran, se descargan, se editan, se separan del sonido, se multiplican, y se conectan entre sí resquebrajando la corteza de la gramática visual. Frente a la supuesta neutralidad de la crónica, los documentos de archivo y la linealidad de la historia colonial, los Ingrávidos reactivan las supersticiones del pasado. Su cámara está bajo el hechizo de animales, piedras, tierras, montañas, lagos y cactus contrarrestando la violencia colonial. “Doce cuadros de relación” expone la visión colonial y el vínculo entre conocimiento, clasificación, posesión y control. “24 presagios” es una visión mágica, un elogio de la superstición que abarca formas de conocimiento no objetivas. – Almudena Escobar López

Colectivo Los Ingrávidos surge como una forma audiovisual radical de resistencia en México en 2012. Su trabajo establece conexiones transhistóricas a través del tiempo combinando metraje encontrado con filmaciones en 16mm, glitches digitales y poesía documental. Almudena Escobar López trabaja en la Memorial Art Gallery (MAG) en Rochester, donde es comisaria del programa de exposiciones audiovisuales, Media Arts Watch. Almudena lleva colaborando con Colectivo Los Ingrávidos desde que co-programó su trabajo como parte del Flaherty NYC en 2018. Del 12 al 31 de octubre, VSW.ORG mostrará un programa de cortometrajes del Colectivo Los Ingrávidos, además de un programa de películas y videos de la colección de películas de VSW seleccionados por miembros del colectivo y Almudena. El 21 de octubre Almudena estará en  conversación con Colectivo Los Ingrávidos examinando las relaciones entre archivos, colonialismo y la creación de imágenes.
