Visual Studies Workshop invites you to attend our upcoming VSW Salon, featuring an Artist Talk and Open Studio with our current Project Space resident, Priya Kambli.
Priya Kambli is a multimedia artist whose work centers around ancestral archiving, identity and the immigrant experience. While a Project Space Resident at VSW, Priya will be working on a project currently titled “Passport canceled as the holder has acquired Foreign Nationality”.
“In 2011, I gave up my Indian nationality to become an American citizen. Doing so meant having my Indian passport invalidated at the Indian consulate with a stamp stating “Passport canceled as the holder has acquired Foreign Nationality”. Having lived in the United States for over 17 years it seemed odd to claim my American nationality as “foreign”. Taking as a departure point the bureaucratic language stamped in my Indian passport to invalidate it, this exhibition will present a migrant narrative- highlighting the fragmentation of family, identity, and culture common to the migrant experience and standing in contrast to the simplified rhetoric surrounding these topics, by combining labor intensive practice with playful experimentation- installations of objects and text in a variety of materials and media.” – Priya Kambli
Priya will give an artist talk at 6 pm in the VSW microcinema, followed by an open studio.
The VSW Salon is programmed by Tara Merenda Nelson, taranelson@vsw.org
The VSW Salon is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts and by the ArtWorks program of the National Endowment for the Arts.
